Soccer Jersey Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Fit

Sep 25, 2026

Why jersey sizing is different from regular clothing

Soccer jerseys are cut differently from everyday T-shirts. A modern match shirt is designed to sit close to the body so it does not interfere with movement, while a casual fan shirt usually has a looser, more relaxed cut. That is why the size you wear in a high-street T-shirt is often not the size you need in a jersey.

Getting the fit right matters for three reasons: comfort on and off the pitch, how long the shirt lasts, and avoiding the hassle of an exchange.

How to measure yourself in three steps

You only need a soft tape measure and two minutes.

  1. Chest: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level under your arms. Do not pull it tight - it should sit snug but comfortable.
  2. Length: measure from the highest point of your shoulder down to where you want the hem to finish, usually around the hip bone.
  3. Sleeve preference: decide between short sleeve and long sleeve. Long-sleeve versions use the same body measurements, so your chest measurement still drives the size.

Write the chest number down first. On most jersey size charts, chest is the measurement that determines your size; length and shoulder are secondary.

General jersey size reference

Use the table below as a starting point. Measurements are garment chest, given as a range, and can vary slightly by season and cut - always compare against the specific product page before ordering.

Size Chest (cm) Chest (in) Typical height (cm)
S 88-94 35-37 165-172
M 94-100 37-39 170-178
L 100-106 39-42 176-183
XL 106-112 42-44 181-188
2XL 112-120 44-47 186-192

Choosing a fit: slim, regular or relaxed

Slim / match fit

Cut close to the body with stretch fabric. If you plan to wear the shirt only for casual use and prefer a looser feel, consider going one size up.

Regular / fan fit

The most forgiving option. It follows the body without clinging, and it is the safest choice if you are between two sizes.

Kids' sizing

Children's jerseys are sized by height rather than chest alone. Measure your child's height and match it to the size band on the product page; if the child is between bands or growing fast, choose the larger one.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Assuming your T-shirt size equals your jersey size - it usually does not.
  • Using body weight alone instead of a chest measurement.
  • Ignoring the length measurement if you are tall or broad-shouldered.
  • Ordering kids' sizes by age instead of height - age bands differ widely between brands.

Quick checklist before you order

  1. Measure chest and length, and write both down.
  2. Compare against the size chart on the specific product page.
  3. Decide whether you want a snug or relaxed feel, and size up if you want relaxed.
  4. If you are between sizes, take the larger one - jerseys do not stretch much after washing.

Caring for your jersey after you buy it

Printed names, numbers and badges are the first thing to suffer in a hot wash. Turn the shirt inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle, and never tumble dry on high heat. See our full jersey care guide for the step-by-step routine.
