Fan Version vs Player Version Jerseys: What Is the Difference?

Sep 25, 2026

The short answer

A player version jersey is built to the specification worn on the pitch: a tighter, athletic cut, the lightest and most breathable fabric, and heat-applied badges to save weight. A fan version jersey is built for supporters: a more relaxed everyday cut, slightly heavier fabric, and usually embroidered or stitched badges that withstand repeated washing.

Neither is "better". They are built for two different jobs.

Side-by-side comparison

Feature Player version Fan version
Cut Slim, athletic, close to the body Regular, relaxed
Fabric Lightest weight, maximum ventilation Slightly heavier, softer hand feel
Badge and logo Usually heat-applied to reduce weight Usually embroidered or stitched
Best for Playing, training, warm weather Everyday wear, match days, layering
Sizing note Often needs one size up for a relaxed fit True to normal clothing size
Price Higher Lower

Which one should you buy?

Choose a player version if you

  • play regularly and want the lightest, most breathable shirt
  • prefer a close, athletic fit
  • want the exact specification worn in matches
  • live somewhere hot and want maximum ventilation

Choose a fan version if you

  • wear the shirt casually or to watch matches
  • prefer a relaxed fit that layers over a hoodie or under a jacket
  • want a badge that survives many washes
  • want better value for money

Sizing: the detail most people get wrong

Because a player version is cut closer to the body, most people who want a normal, comfortable fit need to take one size up compared with the same club's fan version. If you are between sizes, or you want any room at all through the chest, size up on the player version and stay true to size on the fan version.

Measure your chest first and check the chart on each product page - the two versions of the same shirt often have different measurements. Our soccer jersey size guide walks through the measurement step by step.

Long-sleeve and kids' versions

Most clubs also release long-sleeve variants, which use the same body measurements as the short-sleeve version, so your chest measurement still decides the size. Kids' versions follow the same fan-versus-player split but are sized by height rather than chest - match your child's height to the size band on the product page and take the larger one if they are between bands.

Care differences

Player version shirts, with their heat-applied badges and ultra-light fabric, are the more delicate of the two. Wash cold, inside out, and never tumble dry. Fan versions with stitched badges tolerate washing better but still benefit from the same routine. Full instructions are in our jersey care guide.
